Besides being guided by the Twelve Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous, NYIG as an incorporated not-for-profit organization operates pursuant to written By-Laws. The By-Laws set out the privileges and responsibilities of the groups that are members of NYIG, and explain the roles and duties of committees, service positions and staff members.
Quarterly, on the second Saturday of March, June, September and December, the group conscience of NYIG is expressed at Inter-Group Delegates’ Meetings. At Delegates Meetings, members of the Steering Committee report to the groups on the Twelfth-Step activities of the Committees and Areas of NYIG. An Inter-Group Delegate represents their A.A. Group and helps form the group conscious of NYIG by attending and voting at Delegates Meetings and by attending Area Forums. Each group commits to having an Inter-Group Delegate when it joins NYIG and the delegate acts as the liaison between the group, NYIG and other member groups. The responsibilities of the Inter-Group Delegate are set out in the Suggested Duties for Inter-Group Delegates.
Area Forums are bimonthly meetings of Inter-group Delegates of each Area (the five boroughs of New York City and Westchester). An Area Representative, elected at their respective forum, presides at forums and serves on Inter-Group’s Steering Committee. Area Forums provide the opportunity for Inter-group Delegates to stay informed about NYIG activities between Delegates Meetings and provide a means by which Area Representatives become informed about group concerns to relay to the Steering Committee. Exchange Meetings (also referred to as “Booking Meetings”) provide A.A. groups with the opportunity to “exchange” speaker commitments. Two Exchange Meetings are held each quarter, one in Manhattan on the second Saturday of March, June, September and December, and another in Westchester on the third Saturday of February, May, August and November. Quarterly in Manhattan, on the second Saturday of March, June, September and December, NYIG conducts workshops on the suggested duties of group officers. Please visit the Calendar page to find the date and details regarding the next Workshop. In addition, NYIG publishes Suggested Duties for Group Officers that is available for review, download or print (available in Spanish here).
To help A.A. groups better understand what NYIG is and does, NYIG Steering Committee members provide Inter-Group Presentations to closed or business meetings of requesting A.A. Groups to speak on NYIG, the Steering Committee, special events and the service opportunities available to A.A. members and groups. Once your group has agreed to invite NYIG, to schedule presentation, please email email@example.com or call NYIG and ask for a staff member. Please have your group’s information and dates and times it could host a presentation. Presentations require four to six weeks lead time to schedule. We will make every effort to accommodate your request.
Bulletins or Flyers are NYIG announcements of items of interest to local groups; they are generally recited at a meetings secretary break or business meeting. Bulletins keep the fellowship informed about the various committee activities, special events and A.A. happenings in the area. Current bulletins are available for review, download or print here. They also can be picked up at NYIG or mail to you, simply call and ask for a staff member.
