“Self-support begins with me, because I am part of us – the group. We pay our rent and utility bills, buy coffee, snacks and A.A. Literature. We support our central office, our area committee, and our General Service Office. If it were not for those entities, many new people would never discover the miracles of A.A.*”
*Reprinted from Self-Support: Where Money and Spirituality Mix, page 5, with permission of A.A. World Services, Inc.Seventh Tradition, (long form):“The A.A. groups themselves ought to be fully supported by the voluntary contributions of their own members. We think that each group should soon achieve this ideal; that any public solicitation of funds using the name of Alcoholics Anonymous is highly dangerous, whether by groups, clubs, hospitals, or other outside agencies; that acceptance of large gifts from any source, or of contributions carrying any obligation whatever, is unwise. Then too, we view with much concern those A.A. treasuries which continue, beyond prudent reserves, to accumulate funds for no stated A.A. purpose. Experience has often warned us that nothing can so surely destroy our spiritual heritage as futile disputes over property, money, and authority.”  Twelve and Twelve, p. 190

In keeping with the Seventh Tradition, NYIG only accepts contributions from two sources, A.A. groups, and individual A.A. members. Group contributions are those made by A.A. groups from their Seventh Tradition collections. Individual contributions are those made by members of the A.A. fellowship. These financial contributions keep the NYIG office open to facilitate twelfth step work and respond to calls for help from alcoholics throughout the greater New York area. Contributions are also used to purchase literature that is distributed throughout the area to alcoholics in prisons, hospitals and detoxes. While there is no limitation on the amount an A.A. group may contribute to NYIG, in keeping with the Seventh Tradition, individual A.A. members may not give more than five thousand dollars ($5,000.00) per year to NYIG.
